Overview of RESIST platform and its architecture

RESIST platform consists of the following major components:

The Data Collection Components consists of the components that operate on the field (close to the infrastructure) in order to: (a) collect the inspection data (sensor data and images), (b) process the collected images to finally extract the 2D images with the defects and the 3D models of the infrastructures that will be used for further inspection purposes, and (c) store the inspection data in RESIST Platform Backend. The Data Collection Components are:

  1. The RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft System) will fly over/in the infrastructure to collect images and sensor data useful for the inspection evaluation and GCS (Ground Control Station) that offers the required information and tools to the operator on the field to effectively perform the inspection and handle the RPAS and the Total Station that is used for the positioning and navigation of the RPAS.
  2. The Photogrammetric and Cognitive Computer Vision systems identify the defects and extract the 3D model of the infrastructure using the collected 2D images.
  3. The Sensors for Structural Monitoring mounted by RPAS on the infrastructure are sensors that will be developed during the RESIST project, namely the Vibration sensor, the Crack width and depth measurement sensors and their corresponding LabView application, installed and presented in the CGS, that visualises the measurement.

The RESIST Platform Backend consists of five modules for the in depth structural assessment of the bridges/tunnels using the collected inspection data from the field (images and sensor data) and several external sources of information. These modules are:

  1. The esthesis platform and Content of Esthesis (CeP) application manage the IoT devices (sensors) and stores their data and the CeP application that provides a viewer of all stored missions data and the Inspection Mission Planning (IMP) which orchestrates the entire inspection among the users at the control centre and those in the field. There are two types of missions the quick one, which orchestrates the RPAS mission for a first and fast check of the infrastructure, to identify areas of interest to focus the detailed inspection and data gathering. The detailed inspection gathers the complete data necessary for the analysis of areas of Interest. The Quick Image Validation app supports the decisions regarding missions, byt helping to analyse the stored images and identify the areas to focus the detailed inspection, avoiding the need for a comprehensive analysis.
  2. The Structural Vulnerability Assessment Module analyses the data gathered by the RPAS and fixed sensors monitoring the infrastructure (where available) and concludes their overall structural condition and indicates areas requiring further analysis. The Risk Assessment & Management Module for safety and security risk assessment and management of critical structures under extreme events, which is updated with the current condition of the infrastructure based on the most recently collected data.
  3. The Mobility Continuity Module ensures mobility continuity in extreme events using also as input the information of the User’s Behaviour Under Stress Module, which gathers and analyses the drivers information to ensure the best and on-time communication with them during their trip.
  4. The Cyber-security Assessment Module is responsible for protecting the entire system from cyber-attacks and assessing its security posture based on evidence gathered from different levels of the cyber systems, e.g., host, network. The module presents the key metric indicators regarding the system’s assets and potential vulnerabilities in a global dashboard.

Finally, the RESIST system consists of a User Interface to help operators and the administrators to access various functions of the system, and a Mobile Application used by the users of the infrastructure to provide them alternative detours in case of an extreme event..
